Brochure Design for the Healthcare Industry

The practice of medicine is ancient. But medicine in today’s healthcare industry is multidisciplinary. It includes healthcare organizations, doctors, dentists and orthodontists, therapists, hospitals, pharmaceuticals, medical supplies and equipment, health plans, and more.

Brochures for the healthcare industry can serve a multiple of purposes. They can act as an introduction to a healthcare organization or plan. Brochures may accompany a prescription to describe correct usage, potential side effects, and proper storage. Brochures can be part of a medical company’s marketing collateral that helps promote products or services.

Influencing perception of healthcare services and products with a brochure

Brochure design can play a significant role in how a patient or healthcare client perceives a service or product. A poorly designed brochure about a medical procedure or treatment may increase a patient’s stress level and anxiety. Also, with too little or too generalized content, a brochure may not provide enough product or service information to a decision-maker.

Effective brochure designs for healthcare services and products may utilize colors, shapes, and images that reflect the healthcare environment itself.

Consider the colors frequently used in medical environments. Brochure designers may incorporate various shades of blues, cyan, emerald greens and large amounts of white; they may also utilize metallic grays and cool palettes. This range of cooler colors can generate an impression of a clean and professional environment.

Organic and circular shapes can be utilized in brochure design to emphasize the care and treatment of life systems.

The healthcare environment can often seem remote, sterile, and even industrial. Brochure design may incorporate pictures of healthy people and healthcare providers (doctors, dentists, nurses, etc.) to remind patients that healthcare is a network of supportive people as well as systems.

Brochure formats can include bi- and tri-folds for small businesses or mass distribution; larger businesses and services may find bi-fold brochures and multi-page booklets are more helpful in conveying information.

Healthcare brochures, booklets and infographics sheets can be used to:

  • Market healthcare programs.
  • Introduce and describe proper use of pharmaceutical products.
  • Describe the benefits and safe use of medical equipment and devices.
  • Provide support services information for patients and their personal support network.
  • List hotline contact information for help regarding such concerns as depression, abuse, addiction, grief counseling.
  • Describe a treatment process or illustrate/diagram a body part or organ to help a patient more fully understand what is happening in a health condition.

The whole patient

Healthcare is not only about treating illness or injury. It is about the whole person - the medical condition, a patient’s options and wishes, and a patient’s emotional processes. A well-designed brochure or booklet can help a patient understand the medical procedure, the recovery process, what to expect in terms of activity and even the emotional fluctuations that often accompany a major medical event.

Brochure and booklet designers can pull together the words and images that comfort and encourage. The whole person approach to healthcare often includes the well-being of a patient’s personal care team of family and friends. These materials can help guide the extended team through the progression of a loved one’s illness, the cycles of grieving, and offer contacts for support services and networks.

Educating beyond clinic walls with a brochure

Health-related materials can be found in settings beyond the clinics and hospitals. Health and safety brochures are often placed such public locations as libraries, schools, churches, and office locations to remind people of the importance of good healthcare and safety practices.

Brochures before, during, and after a medical need

Brochures can be an integral part of the information exchange between healthcare provider and patient. They can augment information shared by the doctor, pharmacist, physical therapist, or medical device provider. Brochures can be the guidelines for a personal health program or reminders of follow-up care. They can even be sources of encouragement before, during, and following a medical need.
